A Couple of Great Readings Today

There are two amazing readings scheduled for today so everyone in the Oxford, MS area and in San Francisco should mark their literary calendars.

First, Robert Hicks is appearing at Square Books in Oxford to sign his debut novel The Window of the South. Yesterday, we featured some of agent Jeff Kleinman’s opinions about the novel. Here’s what Square Books staff thinks about it: “…Mr. Hicks has taken these facts and other research to resurrect her story and bring home to readers the true horror of the battle and the effects on the McGavocks, farmers, slaves, townspeople and the Confederacy. This powerful novel honors the dead and brings history to life again. A tribute and an engrossing read.” The reading is scheduled for 5:30 and if you can’t make it to the store, call 1-800-648-4001 to order a copy.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, at A Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books, Louise Erdrich signs her new novel, The Painted Drum. The store says “her stunning new novel is a haunting exploration of mothers and daughters, links between generations, sacrifice, loss and the inconceivable death of children. It is a moving contemporary tale, which, like much of Erdrich’s work, draws its power from the traditions of the Ojibwe people.” The signing is at 7pm and you can call 415-441-6670 for more details.
