Woodrell To Appear at Square Books

I’m super jealous of my old colleagues at Square Books in Oxford, MS today. One of my favorite writers, Daniel Woodrell is signing his new novel, Winter’s Bone, there at 5pm. All of Woodrell’s work is fantastic and this new one is getting rave reviews.

Publishers Weekly says “At its best, the novel captures the near-religious criminal mania pervasive in rural communities steeped in drug culture. Woodrell’s prose, lyrical as often as dialogic, creates an unwieldy but alluring narrative that allows him to draw moments of unexpected tenderness from predictable scripts: from Ree’s fearsome, criminal uncle Teardrop, Ree discovers the unshakable strength of family loyalty; from her friend Gail and her woefully dependant siblings, Ree learns that a faith in kinship can blossom in the face of a bleak and flawed existence.” And Kirkus says the book has “echoes of Inman’s journey in Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain, the homicidal poetry of Cormac McCarthy’s tense narratives.”

So if you’re in Mississippi, be sure to swing by the store. Or, call 1-800-648-4001 to order a signed copy.
